The Inca Empire

Pachacuti took the throne in a coup of competence — his father and the sitting heir had fled before the Chanca, and he did not — and then rebuilt Cusco on a puma-shaped plan and rewrote Andean history so that the empire he was inventing looked as if it had always been destined. His son Topa Inca Yupanqui doubled it, breaking the rival kingdom of Chimor and dragging its goldsmiths back to the capital, while the elder son Amaru Topa Inca, judged insufficiently warlike, spent his life instead on terraces and irrigation and was quietly passed over.

By the time Huayna Capac inherited the machine, it ran on inspection tours, roads and census counts, and he spent his reign in the north rather than in Cusco. It did not survive contact with Europe — because it never had to. Smallpox crossed the Andes ahead of any Spaniard and killed Huayna Capac and his named heir, Ninan Cuyuchi, within the same year, leaving a state without a head. What followed was a war between two surviving sons: Huáscar, who moved against the wealth locked up in the mummy cult of dead emperors and lost Cusco for it, and the general staff that inherited his rival's cause — Chalcuchimac, Quizquiz and Rumiñahui — who fought on for years after the war itself had already been decided by a disease none of them ever saw.
