China's long imperial consolidation under Liu Bang's line, the historian who chronicled it, and the emperor who sent Zhang Qian west.

Qin's collapse touched off a scramble that came down to two men: the aristocratic warlord Xiang Yu and the commoner-turned-king Liu Bang, guided by the strategist Zhang Liang and the general Han Xin. Liu Bang won, founded the Han dynasty, and left a formidable widow, Empress Lü Zhi, to rule as regent in all but name.

Under Emperor Wu, Han China reached its imperial height — the envoy Zhang Qian opened the Silk Road west, the cavalry general Huo Qubing broke the nomadic Xiongnu, and the scholar Dong Zhongshu fused Confucianism into state orthodoxy for the next two thousand years. Watching it all, the court historian Sima Qian — castrated for defending a disgraced general, and writing through the humiliation — produced the Shiji, the single record on which most of what we know about this entire span of Chinese history depends.
