She reformed the army, the treasury, and the schools; she bore sixteen children while running a continental power; and she married those children into every throne she could reach. She never took the imperial title in her own name — her husband Francis Stephen wore it — but no one doubted who ruled.

Her court was a dynasty in motion. Joseph II, her co-regent son, was an impatient reformer who tried to enlighten the empire by decree. Maria Carolina took Naples; Marie Antoinette took France, and the family's luck with her. Behind the throne stood Kaunitz, the chancellor who engineered a diplomatic revolution.
